The City of Boise, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Southwest Idaho Resource Conservation and Development Council, are removing vegetation prone to fire in targeted neighborhoods in the foothills, including the Castle Rock Reserve. Due to the topography of the reserve, it is virtually impossible to manually reduce the fuel load in the area. Therefore, the city is using grant funds to contract with a local goat grazing operation on these lands. The City’s goal is to reduce the amount of invasive weed species within the Reserve and over time, change the plant composition to more native plant species. Their first step is to survey the property to make sure that we do not graze on private property. Next, there will be approximately 700 goats grazing Castle Rock Reserve and some adjoining parcels that may abut private property. The goats will be grazing from approximately mid-May through early June, depending on the weather and amount of growth. An herbicide will be sprayed 10 feet on either side of trails on city-owned property within the reserve to prevent these invasive weeds from growing in late summer or early fall. Finally, areas along the trails that were treated with the herbicide will be reseeded with native grasses and forbs in the fall or winter to permanently change the vegetation in the area.
